Types of EV Chargers:

• Smart chargers – Can be programmed to charge at off-peak times, monitor energy use, and integrate with smart home systems.
• Tethered chargers – Charging cable permanently attached to the unit; ready to plug in immediately.
• Untethered chargers – Charging cable is separate; allows flexibility to use different cables or share the charger between vehicles.
Electrical Considerations Prior to EV Charger Installation
Always use a fully qualified Part P registered electrician.
The electrician will check:
• Consumer unit capacity: Check whether your current board can handle the additional load. Upgrades may be needed.
• RCBO Protection: Each EV charger circuit should have its own RCBO to protect against overload and electric shock.
• Surge Protection: Protect your charger and other home electronics from sudden power spikes.
• Earthing and bonding: Must be checked before any electrical work can take place. If not present or not to the correct size, it must be installed or upgraded.
• Choose a convenient location near your parking space.
• Consider cable length and ease of access to the vehicle.
What to Expect When Ordering an EV Charger Installation
1. Initial Consultation and Survey
A qualified electrician will discuss your needs, inspect your property, and check your existing consumer unit and wiring. This helps determine if your electrical system can safely support a new EV charger or if upgrades are required.
2. Quotation and Options

3. DNO Application

4. Scheduling the Installation
Once everything is approved, the installation is scheduled at a convenient time. Depending on complexity, the work may take a few hours to a full day.
5. Installation Process
• A dedicated circuit is installed for your charger, usually with RCBO protection for safety. A dedicated mini consumer unit may be needed.
• Surge protection may also be added to safeguard the charger and other home electronics.
• The charger is securely mounted, wired, and tested to meet current regulations.
6. Testing and Handover
The system is fully tested, and the electrician will explain how to use the charger, demonstrate any smart features, and provide certification of compliance.
7. Certification and Part P Registration
After installation, a full electrical installation certificate and Part P registration certificate will be emailed to you, confirming that the work meets UK domestic electrical safety standards.
