Lighting & Power Services FAQs
Do I need an electrician to install new lights or sockets?
Yes - most electrical work should be carried out by a qualified electrician to ensure it’s safe, complies with UK regulations, and is properly tested and certified where required.
This is especially important if new wiring is involved or the work is in areas like kitchens, bathrooms, or outdoors.
Simple like-for-like replacements (such as changing a light fitting, switch, or socket) can be done yourself if you are confident and know how to do it safely. However, if there is no earth present at a lighting point, only plastic or double-insulated fittings should be used.
Can a single socket be changed to a double socket?
Yes - in most cases a single socket can be replaced with a double socket to give you more usable outlets.
This usually involves removing the existing back box and installing a larger one, which may require the wall to be chased slightly to fit it properly.
We always aim to keep disruption and mess to a minimum and will make good around the area once the work is complete. However, if the existing plaster is old or loose, some may come away during the work, and additional plastering or decorating may be needed afterwards.
Can I change a central light to downlights?
Yes - a single central light can usually be replaced with multiple downlights to give a more modern and even spread of light.
This involves new wiring and cutting holes in the ceiling, so there will be some disruption.
Where possible, wiring is run from above to reduce mess. If access is limited, small holes may be needed and some making good or plastering afterwards — you may need a professional plasterer for this, as electricians don’t usually carry out plastering work.
Downlights are fitted between ceiling joists, so placement isn’t completely flexible, but we’ll always design a layout that works well both practically and visually.
