Do I need a dedicated circuit for an
EV charger?
Yes. EV chargers require a dedicated circuit from the consumer unit to ensure the installation is safe and compliant with current regulations. This circuit must be protected by a Type A RCBO, and we include surge protection as standard on our installations. We also install load management (power balancing) using a CT clamp on the incoming mains to monitor usage and help prevent overloading the supply.
Can I charge my EV from a normal plug socket?
You can charge using a standard 13A indoor or outdoor socket occasionally for EV charging, but it’s not ideal for regular use. Charging times are much longer, and extended high-power use can cause heat build-up in the plug and socket over time. A dedicated EV charger is usually the safer and more practical long-term solution.
