Power Installations
Power installations like cookers, showers and new circuits need to be installed correctly to stay safe and compliant.
This guide explains what’s involved, based on experience from electrical work carried out by Richard at RW Currion Electrical across Banbury and surrounding areas.

Power Installation & Tips for Your Home
Whether you’re installing a new cooker, electric shower, additional sockets, heater circuits or upgrading a circuit, power installations must comply with the latest BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations).
Poorly installed power circuits can overload wiring, cause nuisance tripping, or create serious fire risks. That’s why correct cable sizing, RCD protection, and testing are essential.
Common Power Installations We Advise On
Electric Showers
Electric showers require:
• A dedicated circuit
• Correct cable size (often 6mm2 or 10mm2 depending on rating)
• RCD and MCB or RCBO protection
• Adequate main earthing and bonding
Electric Cookers and Hobs
Cookers usually need:
• A dedicated cooker circuit
• Correct MCB and MCB or RCBO rating
• Isolator switch within 2 metres
• Proper load calculation (diversity rules apply)
Incorrect installations can overload consumer units or cause overheating at terminals.
Additional Sockets and Spurs
Adding sockets is not always as simple as spurring off an existing outlet.
We check:
• Whether the circuit is a ring or radial
• Existing load on the circuit
• Condition of wiring
• RCD protection
Unprotected or overloaded circuits are a common issue found during an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR).
Dedicated Circuits for High-Power Equipment
Items like:
• EV chargers
• Hot tubs
• Garden offices
• Induction hobs
Will require a circuit from it's own dedicated RCD and MCB or RCBO in the consumer unit.
Do Power Installations Need to Be Notified?
Some electrical work in domestic properties falls under Part P of the Building Regulations.
• New circuits
• Consumer unit changes
• Work in bathrooms
Always ensure work is carried out by a competent, Part P registered electrician.
Why Correct Installation Matters
A properly installed power circuit should:
• Be correctly protected against overload and fault current
• Disconnect safely in the event of a fault
• Be tested and certified
• Comply with current regulations
Cut corners here and problems often show up later during a house sale, EICR or landlord inspection.
