What Is a C3 Code on an EICR?

C3 – Improvement Recommended

C3 observations indicate issues that are not immediately dangerous, but improvements are recommended to enhance safety, reliability, and compliance with UK electrical standards. Examples include missing RCD protection in low-risk locations, minor labeling omissions, or equipment that could be better protected. Addressing C3 observations helps prevent future risks and keeps your installation up to current standards. For professional assistance, see our EICR inspection service.

Common examples of C3 observations include:

RCD and Circuit Protection

• Absence of RCD protection for a socket-outlet that is unlikely to supply portable or mobile equipment for outdoors
• Absence of RCD protection for cables installed less than 50 mm from a wall or partition where the cables are not mechanically protected or earthed
• Absence of RCD protection for circuits in a location containing a bath or shower where supplementary bonding is present
• Reliance on a voltage-operated earth-leakage circuit-breaker for fault protection
• Absence of a quarterly test notice for any RCD or voltage-operated earth-leakage circuit-breaker
• Absence of AFDD (Arc Fault Detection Device) where required for added fire protection
• Absence of SPD (Surge Protection Device) for protection of sensitive or critical equipment

Circuit Conductors and Cabling

• Absence of circuit protective conductors in circuits with only Class II (all-insulated) luminaires and switches
• Bare protective conductor of an insulated and sheathed cable not sleeved or colour coded
• Sheath of an insulated and sheathed non-armoured cable not taken inside the enclosure of an accessory
• Cables not adequately supported, increasing risk of strain

Equipment Positioning and Notices

• Electrical equipment with an inadequate IP rating for the location, if this does not result in potential danger
• Socket-outlet positioned in a way that could damage socket, plug, or flex
• Absence of circuit identification details
• Absence of “Safety Electrical Connection — Do Not Remove” notice at earthing and bonding points
• Plastic consumer unit installed under wooden stairs or in an escape route
• Mixed manufacturer switchgear in a consumer unit where no modifications have been made
• Twin and earth cable used outside with no additional protection

Important Note

C3 observations are considered improvements recommended rather than urgent faults. While these are not dangerous, addressing them improves safety, clarity, and compliance. Repairs and improvements should be carried out by a qualified electrician. See our EICR inspection service for professional assistance.
