Bathroom Electrical Installations FAQs
Can I have a socket in a bathroom?
Standard plug sockets aren’t allowed in most bathroom areas. Shaver sockets are permitted in certain zones, and anything else needs to be carefully positioned outside of restricted areas. I can advise on what’s safe and compliant.
Do bathroom lights need to be IP rated?
Yes - depending on where they’re installed. Areas close to baths and showers require specific IP ratings to protect against water. This is based on the different bathroom zones, which determine what type of fittings are safe to use. I’ll make sure the correct lights are installed in the right locations.
Do extractor fans need an isolator switch?
In most cases, yes — a fan isolator is fitted on new installations so the fan can be safely maintained or replaced without affecting the rest of the circuit. It allows the fan to be fully isolated while still keeping the lighting circuit live.
On older setups, if there’s no window in the bathroom, it’s strongly recommended to have an isolator fitted so the fan can be safely worked on when needed.
Is bathroom electrical work notifiable?
Yes - new electrical work in a bathroom is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations. This includes things like installing a new circuit or carrying out electrical work in bathroom zones.
Where required, all work is properly tested, certified, and notified so you have the correct documentation for your records.

What to Expect During Bathroom Electrical Work
Bathroom electrical work can vary depending on the job, but here are some common things to expect:
• New cabling may be required from the consumer unit, especially for electric showers or new circuits
• A 4-inch hole may need to be drilled through an external wall for an extractor fan
• Supplementary bonding may be required depending on the existing installation
• RCD or RCBO protection may need to be installed or upgraded for safety
• Floors may be lifted or small areas of wall chased to run cables neatly
• Power may need to be turned off at times during the work
For full bathroom refurbishments, the room will usually be out of use for a period while work is carried out alongside plumbers, builders and tilers.
Everything is planned carefully to keep disruption to a minimum, with clear communication throughout so you know what’s happening at each stage.
