Dangerous Electrical Faults Found in Banbury

Examples of Dangerous Electrical Faults Found in Banbury

Burnt MCB and damaged consumer unit caused by electrical fault in Banbury

These are a few real electrical faults I’ve come across over the years, all found on genuine jobs in and around Banbury.

They range from overheated connections and overloaded circuits to unsafe wiring hidden out of sight — the kind of issues that can go unnoticed until something stops working or becomes dangerous.

Unsafe Meter Setup in Bedsits

This property had been converted into bedsits many years ago, with individual meters like the one pictured installed in each room. The electrical installation had been poorly carried out and altered over time, with unsafe wiring and exposed live connections, in some areas with little or no protection. It had deteriorated to the point where the council eventually condemned the building.

Burnt MCB in Restaurant

On a call-out to a restaurant, a walk-in fridge had been incorrectly wired into a standard socket circuit. This caused overloading and led to a burnt MCB in the consumer unit.

Equipment like this should always be installed on a dedicated circuit to prevent overloading and reduce the risk of failure.

Hidden Dangerous Connection

This was found during renovation work — a poorly made connection buried out of sight, using standard connectors wrapped in a plastic bag and plastered over. Faults like this often go unnoticed until work starts or something fails.

Burnt Junction Box Under Floor

A junction box hidden under the floor had been overheating for some time. When the cable was disturbed, the connection failed completely.

You can see where electrical arcing has occurred at the connection, which is a sign of a loose or failing joint.

Final Thought

Faults like these don’t always show obvious signs straight away. Often the first indication is tripping, flickering lights or loss of power.

An EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) can help identify issues like this early, before they develop into something more serious.

If something doesn’t seem right with your electrics, it’s always worth getting it checked sooner rather than later.
