Lights Flickering When Using a Dimmer Switch?

If your lights flicker when using a dimmer switch, it’s usually down to compatibility issues rather than a serious electrical fault.

In most cases, flickering lights are caused by non-dimmable LED bulbs or an incompatible dimmer switch.

This is a very common problem, especially after upgrading older lighting to LED.

Common Causes of Flickering Lights

Non-dimmable LED bulbs
These aren’t designed to work with a dimmer and will often flicker or fail.

Old-style dimmer switches
Older dimmers were made for halogen or incandescent bulbs and don’t regulate LED loads properly.

Incorrect LED dimmer
Not all LED dimmers are the same — some cheaper or older models still cause flickering.

Faulty dimmer switch
Worn or damaged dimmers can cause inconsistent output and flickering lights.

What Causes Lights to Flicker on a Dimmer?

Not all LED bulbs are dimmable — and even when they are, they need the right type of dimmer. Dimmable bulbs will usually be clearly marked on the packaging and often on the bulb itself.

Older dimmer switches were designed for halogen or incandescent bulbs and often don’t work properly with LEDs. This mismatch is one of the most common causes of flickering.

Dimmer switches control the amount of power sent to a light, but LED bulbs use much less power than older lighting. Because of this, not all dimmers can regulate them correctly, and LED bulbs also contain electronic components that require the correct type of dimmer to function properly.

Modern LED-compatible dimmer switches are designed to handle lower loads and provide smoother control.

If the dimmer and bulbs aren’t compatible, the result is often flickering, buzzing, or inconsistent lighting.

When to Replace the Dimmer Switch

If you’ve already got dimmable LED bulbs fitted and the lights still flicker, the dimmer switch is usually the issue.

Upgrading to a proper LED dimmer often solves the problem straight away.

When It Could Be Something More Serious

In some cases, flickering lights can be caused by loose connections or wiring issues.

If the flickering affects multiple lights, happens without a dimmer, or is getting worse over time, it’s worth having it checked.
