What Is an FI Code on an EICR?

FI – Further Investigation

EICR Code FI stands for “Further Investigation”. It is used when an electrician identifies a potential issue but cannot confirm whether it is dangerous without carrying out additional testing.

Sometimes mistakenly referred to as “F1”, the correct classification is FI.

FI observations indicate that more investigation is needed to determine whether a fault exists and if it poses a risk. Until this is resolved, the condition of the installation cannot be fully confirmed.

An FI code will usually result in an unsatisfactory EICR, as the installation cannot be confirmed as safe until further investigation has been completed.

For professional assistance, see our EICR inspection service.

Common examples of FI observations include:

Inspection Limitations

• Parts of the installation not accessible (e.g. behind walls, under floors, or in loft spaces)
• Equipment that could not be safely isolated or fully tested

Testing Irregularities

• Test results outside expected values
• Inconsistent or unexpected readings during testing

Identification Issues

• Unidentified circuits
• Missing or unclear circuit labelling preventing full assessment

Potential Hidden Issues

• Suspected damage to cables or connections not visible during inspection
• Signs of previous alterations where full verification isn’t possible

What Happens Next?

• Further investigation will be required
• This may involve additional testing or accessing hidden areas
• If a fault is found, it will be reclassified as C1 or C2 depending on severity

Important Note

⚡ An FI observation does not confirm a fault, but it does mean further investigation is required before the installation can be considered safe. The issue must be investigated before the condition of the installation can be fully assessed. This should be carried out by a qualified electrician to identify and resolve any underlying issues. See our EICR inspection service for professional assistance.
