Electric Heating FAQs
Does an electric heater need its own circuit?
It depends on the size of the heater, the number of heaters being installed and the condition of the existing electrical installation.
A single lower-powered panel heater may be suitable on an existing circuit, often through a fused spur, if the circuit has enough spare capacity. Larger heaters, multiple heaters, storage heaters or underfloor heating may need a dedicated circuit back to the consumer unit.
Before installing fixed electric heating, Richard can check the cable size, circuit loading, protective device, RCD or RCBO protection and consumer unit suitability.
Are electric heaters safe to install in bathrooms?
Yes, electric heaters can be installed in bathrooms, but they need to be suitable for the location and installed correctly.
Bathroom heaters and electric towel rails must be chosen and positioned with the bathroom zones, IP rating, RCD or RCBO protection and manufacturer’s instructions in mind.
Controls, fused spurs and switches may need to be positioned outside the bathroom or in a suitable safe location, depending on the installation.
Richard can advise on the safest and most suitable option for your bathroom.
What is the difference between a panel heater and a storage heater?
A panel heater provides heat when it is switched on, so it is usually used for direct, controllable heating in bedrooms, lounges, offices, flats and similar rooms.
Older basic panel heaters are often far less efficient to use than today’s electric radiator-style panel heaters, which usually have better thermostats, timers and control options.
A storage heater is designed to charge up using off-peak electricity, then release heat later. Modern storage heaters often have better controls than older units, but they may still need suitable wiring, controls and off-peak supply arrangements.
Richard can check the existing heater circuit, consumer unit and switching arrangement before replacing old storage heaters or installing modern electric heating.
Can the wiring be hidden for wall-mounted electric heaters?
Where possible, wiring can be hidden or kept discreet during a wall-mounted electric heater installation.
Depending on the property, cables may be routed through stud walls, cupboards, floor voids or existing cable routes. In some properties, especially where walls are solid or decoration is already finished, neat surface trunking may be the most practical option.
For new electric heating points, the heater is usually best positioned near an existing socket or suitable circuit where possible, with a new fused spur installed for the fixed heater.
Richard will always aim for a tidy, safe installation, with cables protected and routed sensibly.

Modern Panel Heaters and Electric Radiators
Modern electric panel heaters, electric radiators and oil-filled heaters are often used where simple, controllable electric heating is needed without extending wet central heating.
They can be a good option for flats, rental properties, extensions, bedrooms, lounges, home offices, garden rooms and rooms where storage heating is not wanted.
Many modern panel heaters are wall-mounted, neat in appearance and available with built-in programmers, thermostats and smart control options depending on the model. Electric radiators and oil-filled heaters can also suit rooms where a more traditional radiator-style appearance is preferred.
Richard has installed modern panel heaters in a range of local properties, including the Elephant and Castle pub conversion in Grimsbury, where electric panel heaters were installed throughout the flats as part of the conversion work.
Depending on the heater type and manufacturer’s instructions, installation may require a fused spur, dedicated supply, timer control or suitable local isolation.
Storage Heater Replacement
Storage heaters are still found in some older electric-only homes and flats, including 1980s and 1990s properties around areas such as Grimsbury and Hardwick.
RW Currion Electrical can help with replacing older storage heaters, checking off-peak heating supplies, inspecting heater circuits and fault finding where heaters no longer work correctly.
Some older storage heater installations may need the consumer unit, cable size, protective devices and switching arrangements checked before replacement.
Bathroom and Kitchen Electric Heaters
Electric towel rails, bathroom heaters and kitchen plinth heaters can be useful where extra heat is needed without taking up much space.
Richard can install suitable electrical supplies for bathroom electric towel rails, panel heaters, fan-assisted heaters and kitchen plinth heaters, taking account of the existing circuit, manufacturer’s instructions and the location of the heater.
Bathroom heaters need particular care because bathrooms have additional electrical safety requirements, including bathroom zones and RCD or RCBO protection.
Kitchen plinth heaters are often fitted under kitchen units to provide extra heat without using wall space, making them useful in kitchens, utility rooms and open-plan kitchen areas.
Depending on the heater type, installation may include a fused spur, timer control, thermostat control, local isolation or a dedicated circuit where required.
