Loft Lighting and Power FAQs
What type of lighting is best for a dark loft?
We highly recommend LED batten lights over traditional single-bulb pendants. Lofts are full of boxes and structural timbers that cast heavy shadows. LED battens provide a bright, wide, and even spread of light across the whole space.
They are also highly energy-efficient, long-lasting, and operate coolly, making them much safer around stored items.
Can you just run the loft sockets off my existing upstairs bedroom sockets?
It depends on your current wiring and what you plan to plug in up there. In many cases, we can safely run a spur from your upstairs ring circuit to power standard items like laptops or a TV.
However, if you plan to run high-draw appliances (like electric heaters), we may need to install a dedicated circuit from your consumer unit. We will assess the safest route before starting any work.
Will getting cables up to the loft ruin my upstairs ceilings?
Not at all. We pride ourselves on clean, minimally invasive installations. In the vast majority of homes, we can route the necessary cables through existing cavities without needing to cut channels into your finished ceilings.
Where available, we try to run cables through an upstairs cupboard, like the airing cupboard. Where necessary, mini trunking may need to be used, installed discreetly in the corner of a room.
We use dust sheets and leave your home exactly as we found it.
Can you install the electrics if I am getting my boiler moved to the loft?
Yes, we regularly handle electrical installations for loft-mounted boilers. We will install the dedicated, switched fused spur right next to the appliance for safe isolation, as well as any control wiring needed for your thermostat or smart heating system (such as Nest or Hive).
It is also worth noting that under building and safety regulations, gas engineers require the loft to have permanent, fixed lighting and a safe, boarded walkway from the hatch to the boiler before they will service it. We can install the necessary lighting and power at the same time to ensure your entire setup is fully compliant and ready for your heating engineer.
Is it safe to lay loft insulation directly over electrical cables?
Generally, no. With modern building regulations requiring up to 270mm of thick thermal insulation, completely burying power cables can cause them to overheat because the heat they naturally generate cannot escape. This drastically reduces the amount of power the cable can safely carry and can become a serious fire hazard.
When RW Currion Electrical installs your loft power and lighting, we ensure all cables are properly clipped to the sides of the joists or rafters, or routed safely above the insulation layer so they can stay cool. If you’ve recently had thick insulation laid over your existing house wiring, we can also inspect it to make sure it is safe and properly rated.

Loft Lighting and Power Installation
Many lofts have little or no lighting, making them difficult and potentially unsafe to access. Whether you use your loft for storage, need access to a boiler, or are planning future improvements, good lighting and convenient power can make a huge difference.
