Oven & Hob Installation Banbury and Surrounding Areas
If you’ve bought a new oven, hob or induction hob, it’s important to make sure it is connected to the correct electrical supply.
Some cooking appliances are straightforward replacements, while others need the existing circuit checked first. The cable size, protective device, cooker switch, connection point and manufacturer’s instructions all need to be suitable for the appliance being installed.
RW Currion Electrical provides electric oven and hob installation in Banbury and the surrounding villages. This includes connecting built-in ovens, electric hobs, induction hobs and cookers, as well as checking existing cooker circuits where required.

Oven & Hob Installation FAQs
Do I need an electrician to install an electric oven?
Some ovens come with a plug and can be connected to a suitable socket. Larger ovens, double ovens and some built-in appliances may need a fixed electrical connection. If you are unsure, it is best to have the circuit and appliance instructions checked by a qualified electrician.
Can an electric oven be plugged into a normal socket?
Some single electric ovens are designed to plug into a standard socket, but not all of them are.
As a general guide, a single oven rated up to around 2.5kW may be suitable for connection to a standard 13A plug and socket, but the manufacturer’s guidelines must always be checked before installation. The appliance rating, installation instructions and existing socket circuit all need to be suitable before the oven is connected.
Can I replace a gas hob with an electric or induction hob?
Yes, but the electrical supply may need upgrading first. Gas disconnection must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and the new electric or induction hob will need a suitable electrical connection.
Why does my oven or hob keep tripping the electrics?
Tripping can be caused by a faulty appliance, damaged cable, overloaded circuit, moisture, or a problem with the protective device. The appliance and circuit should be tested to find the cause safely.
With ovens, the fault is often caused by the heating element or the fan. Electricians do not usually repair the internal parts of ovens, and it is often more cost-effective to use a specialist appliance repair engineer. RW Currion Electrical can recommend a local appliance repair person where needed.
Can I replace my electric hob like for like?
Most of the time yes, but the new hob may have a different power rating from the old one. The existing cable, protective device and connection point should be checked before the replacement hob is connected.
The size of the cut-out in the worktop should also be checked before ordering or fitting the new hob. Even if the hob looks the same size from above, the part that drops into the worktop may be different and the opening may need to be made larger.

Electric Oven Installation
Some single ovens can be connected to a suitable existing socket, while larger ovens, double ovens and some built-in appliances may require a dedicated cooker circuit.
Before connecting an oven, the existing circuit, cable size, connection point and protective device should be checked. If the existing installation is suitable, the oven can usually be connected and tested.
If the circuit is not suitable for the new appliance, advice can be provided before the oven is used.
Electric Hob and Induction Hob Installation
Electric hobs, ceramic hobs and induction hobs often require a fixed electrical connection rather than a standard plug.
When replacing an existing hob, the appliance rating should be checked to make sure the existing circuit is suitable. This is especially important when changing to an induction hob, as different models can have different electrical requirements.
For new kitchens, it is usually best to check the hob requirements before the worktop is fitted.
Freestanding Electric Cooker Installation
Freestanding electric cookers, sometimes called standalone cookers or all-in-one cookers, usually include both an oven and hob in one appliance.
These are normally connected to a suitable dedicated cooker circuit rather than plugged into a standard socket. Before installation, the cooker rating, existing cable size, cooker switch, connection point and protective device should all be checked.
If you are replacing an old freestanding cooker with a new one, the existing circuit may be suitable, but this still needs checking against the manufacturer’s instructions for the new appliance.
If the existing cooker circuit is not suitable, advice can be provided on any changes needed before the cooker is connected and used.
Cooker Circuits and Connection Points
Oven and hob installation may involve more than simply connecting the appliance.
The existing electrical supply needs to be suitable for the appliance being installed. This may include checking the cooker control switch, cooker outlet plate, cable size, protective device, RCD or RCBO protection and earthing arrangement.
If alterations are required, the options can be explained clearly before any work is carried out.
Ovens and hobs are often installed as part of wider kitchen electrical work.
This can include appliance supplies, sockets, extractor fans, lighting, under-cabinet lighting and consumer unit alterations where required.
For larger kitchen projects, it is usually better to plan the electrical work before units, worktops and appliances are fitted.
