Security Lighting Installation Banbury and Surrounding Areas
If you need new security lighting installing or an old PIR floodlight replacing, RW Currion Electrical installs, replaces and repairs security lights for homes, garages, driveways, side passages, gardens, sheds, outbuildings, commercial units and light industrial premises in Banbury and the surrounding villages.
Security lighting work can include PIR floodlights, LED security lights, motion sensor lights, driveway lighting, garage security lights, side access lighting, replacement of old halogen floodlights, fault finding and new outside lighting supplies.
Security lighting is not just useful as a deterrent. A well-positioned PIR security light or LED floodlight can make dark areas less appealing to intruders by removing hiding places and drawing attention to movement around driveways, garages, side paths, gardens, yards and access points. It can also make it easier to use those areas at night, giving you better visibility and safer movement after dark.
All security lighting needs to be wired safely, suitable for outdoor use and tested properly.

Security Lighting FAQs
What type of security light is best for my property?
We highly recommend modern LED security floodlights over older halogen models. LEDs provide a crisp, bright light that completely eliminates dark blind spots, but they use a fraction of the energy. A 30W LED light can match the brightness of an old 300W halogen bulb, saving you money on your energy bills.
We can install them as standard manual switch lights, motion-activated (PIR) lights that trigger when someone approaches, or dusk-to-dawn lights that provide a continuous, low-level glow all night.
Can my security light shine into my neighbour's garden?
It can, but we take great care to ensure it doesn’t cause a problem. Under the UK Environmental Protection Act, artificial light can be classed as a "statutory nuisance" if it beams directly into a neighbour's bedroom window.
Why does my sensor light keep switching on and off for no reason?
This is a very common issue usually caused by a poorly positioned or cheap PIR (Passive Infrared) sensor. It might be picking up passing street traffic, swaying tree branches, heat vents, or even local wildlife like cats and foxes.
The reputable branded lights we install allow us to fine-tune both the physical angle and the internal sensitivity settings. We adjust the sensor so it ignores background movement and only triggers when an actual human steps onto your property.
Do I need a completely new circuit run for outdoor lights?
In many cases, no. If your existing downstairs or upstairs lighting circuits have enough spare capacity, we can often safely extend the circuit to feed your new outdoor security lights.
However, any new or extended outdoor circuit must be protected by a 30mA RCD (Residual Current Device) to comply with safety regulations and protect against electric shocks in wet conditions. If your current consumer unit is older and lacks this protection, or if you are installing multiple high-powered commercial floodlights, we may need to install a dedicated circuit or upgrade your protection
Is it safe to install outdoor lights myself?
While changing a lightbulb is simple enough, installing external security lighting is a completely different story. Outdoor electrics are exposed to the elements, meaning everything must be strictly weatherproofed using fixtures rated IP65 or higher to prevent water ingress and short circuits.
Furthermore, all new outdoor electrical work in the UK must comply with BS 7671 wiring regulations. Hiring a professional ensures the cables are safely routed, properly earthed, and RCD-protected, keeping your home compliant and your family safe.

Security lighting services
Security lighting is useful for protecting darker or less visible parts of a property, including driveways, garages, side entrances, rear access routes, gates, sheds, outbuildings, commercial units and light industrial premises. It can help improve visibility, make access safer at night and act as a deterrent by drawing attention to movement around vulnerable areas.
For commercial and industrial premises, security lighting can also include internal lighting in areas such as stores, workshops, plant rooms, corridors, loading areas, rear entrances and stock rooms. This can help staff move safely, improve visibility for opening and closing, and make unauthorised access easier to notice.
I can install and replace:
• PIR security lights
• LED sensor floodlights
• Driveway security lights
• Garage security lighting
• Side passage sensor lighting
• Rear access security lighting
• Shed and outbuilding security lights
• Dusk-to-dawn security lighting
• Manual switch security lights
• Timer-controlled security lighting
• Sensor lights for small commercial premises
• Internal security lighting for workshops, stores and access areas
Replacing old or faulty security lights
Old sensor lights often fail because of water ingress, damaged sensors, poor connections, brittle cable, unsuitable junction boxes or general wear from being exposed to the weather.
I can replace faulty security lights with modern LED fittings and check the existing wiring before reconnecting the new light.
This may include:
• Checking the condition of the existing cable
• Checking the earth connection
• Checking the outdoor junction box
• Checking the switch or sensor
• Checking the circuit protection
• Looking for signs of water damage
• Checking for loose or poor connections
• Checking whether the existing wiring is safe to reuse
If the existing wiring is poor or unsafe, I can advise on the best way to put it right rather than simply fitting a new light onto a bad supply.
I can also help with security lights that keep tripping the electrics, stay on all the time, do not come on, flicker or only work now and again.
Outdoor wiring and safety
Outdoor electrical work needs to be suitable for the conditions. Rain, frost, damp walls, sunlight and poor cable routes can all cause problems if the work is not done properly.
Security lighting work may involve:
• Weatherproof fittings
• Suitable outdoor cable routes
• Correct cable supports
• Outdoor-rated junction boxes
• Safe terminations
• Earthing checks
• RCD protection checks
• Testing after installation
• Replacing damaged or unsafe wiring
Outside security lights should not be connected using poor DIY joints, unsuitable indoor accessories or loose cables hanging across walls.
Where needed, I can install new wiring, replace damaged cable, fit suitable outdoor accessories and make sure the circuit is tested properly before use.
