Recent Hypervolt Home 3 Pro Installation in Banbury

The customer had originally arranged an EV charger installation through a workplace scheme, but the installer had not visited the property and had only asked for photos and videos. The customer was not happy with the proposed installation route, as it would have left an additional consumer unit on show in the toilet area. They wanted the job looked at properly before going ahead, with a neater solution that considered the layout of the property, electrical safety and aesthetics.

Before carrying out the Hypervolt Home 3 Pro installation, the existing electrical installation and proposed cable route were checked properly.

CT Clamp and Load Balancing

A CT clamp was installed as part of the Hypervolt Home 3 Pro setup.

A CT clamp, or current transformer clamp, is placed around the incoming live cable and monitors the electrical demand at the property. This allows the charger to see how much power is being used by the house at the same time as the EV charger.

Load balancing via a CT clamp is now required on many EV charger installations, as an EV charger can be one of the largest electrical loads in a domestic property.

If the house is already using a lot of power, the charger can reduce its charging rate to help prevent the main supply from being overloaded.

When the household demand drops, the charger can increase the charging rate again where available.

EV Ultra Cable with Power and Data for Load Balancing

For this Hypervolt Home 3 Pro installation, EV Ultra cable was used between the EV supply and the charger position.

EV Ultra cable is designed for EV charger installations and combines the power cores and data cable within one cable. This helps keep the installation neat and avoids running separate power and data cables.

The power cores supply the charger, while the Cat 5e data cores were used for the CT clamp connection.

This allowed the CT and load balancing setup to be connected neatly as part of the same cable route, helping to keep the installation tidy, practical and suitable for a smart EV charger setup.

Hypervolt Home 3 Pro Charger Mounted and Connected

The Hypervolt Home 3 Pro charger was mounted in the agreed position and connected to the new EV supply.

The installation was completed in line with the manufacturer’s instructions, with the correct protective device, cable sizing and electrical testing carried out before the charger was put into service.

Once connected, the charger was commissioned and checked to make sure it was operating correctly.

As the work included a new consumer unit and an EV charger installation, Building Control notification is also required under Part P of the Building Regulations. This is completed through the competent person scheme, so the customer receives the correct Part P notification for the work.

This is an important part of a proper EV charger installation. It confirms the work has been tested, certified and notified correctly, rather than simply connected and left.
